Chronic Inflammatory diseases have reached epidemic levels in industrialized countries. According to the 2014-2015 National Health Survey, half of all Australians live with a chronic inflammatory disease such as arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune disease and cancer.
WHAT IS INFLAMMATION?
Inflammation is part of the body’s immune response. Inflammation is your body’s way of protecting itself from infection, illness and injury. Inflammation helps remove harmful debris like irritants and pathogens from the body so that the healing process can begin.
There are two types- good and bad.
ACUTE INFLAMMATION is the good type and is the body’s normal response to microbes, tissue damage or metabolic stress. It happens when something harmful or irritating affects our body eg. You get a cut, burn or bruise. When the inflammatory response is short term, it serves a useful purpose by kick-starting our body’s defence system, protecting against further damage and helping us to recover
CHRONIC INFLAMMATION is the bad type and happens when the inflammation process goes on for too long, or there is too much of it. This type is linked with a range of diseases such as asthma and allergies, obesity, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, cancer, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, coeliac disease, ulcerative colitis, or cancer.
Symptoms of inflammation vary depending on whether the reaction is acute or chronic
The effects of acute inflammation can be summed by the acronym PRISH:
Pain- The inflamed area is likely to be painful, especially during and after touching. Chemicals that stimulate nerve endings are released, making the area more sensitive.
Redness- This occurs because the capillaries in the area are filled with more blood than usual
Immobility- There may be loss of function in the region of the inflammation
Swelling. This is caused by a build up of fluid.
Heat- More blood flows to the affected area, and this makes it feel warm to the touch.
WHAT CAUSES IT?
•Chronic inflammation is caused by an imbalance in the immune system
•Certain foods and lifestyles can increase the risk of chronic inflammation
•Not getting enough rest
•Too much Stress
•A high carbohydrate diet are all a good way to increase your risk of chronic inflammation.
•Chronic inflammation can also be the result of the bodies inability to eliminate the cause of acute inflammation or an autoimmune response where the immune system mistakes healthy tissue for unhealthy pathogens.
•Environmental exposure – lead (paint, water pipe), asbestos, allergens in household dust, water damage, drinking water pipes…
•Mould- Visible mould, damp, musty or strange odour
•There are certain foods if eaten in abundance may switch on inflammatory processes within the body.
•Foods that contribute to inflammation tend to be highly processed nutrient poor foods:
-Low-fibre, refined carbohydrates eg. White bread, crackers, donuts, cakes and pastries
-Sugary drinks eg. Soft drinks, energy drinks, iced teas and fruit juices
-Processed convenience and junk foods eg. Snack bars, ice cream, chips, biscuits and other
-Other foods high in saturated fat and/or trans fat eg. Takeaways and deep fried foods
